Why we design our own t-shirt
Like most parents when it comes dressing our little ones we always look for the cutest outfit or the most dapper shirt. Being that we are a bilingual family my mother always asked what my kids shirts said and I always had to read the shirts to her. Spanish was our first language here at Hermanitas and our mother still only speaks Spanish. Then I thought why don’t they make shirts that are bilingual or even in Spanish? Living in Texas there is a large Spanish speaking community and why aren’t we being represented in the retail market? We decided to change that by creating unique, Latin inspired designs in Spanish.
Our first t-shirt collection was Dichos de Abuelita (Grandma Sayings) which as the title suggests was inspired by the nicknames and phrases our grandmother spoke to us. We wanted to create a line of kids clothing that shared all the sweet saying we remembered with our little ones. More often than not, we get someone who sees one of our dicho t-shirts and says “My mom called me that!” or ” My grandma always called us that!”. It’s wonderful to hear our customers fond memories. Not only are we remembering our loved ones but we are sharing part of our culture with our own little ones.
So how did we do it?
- Brainstormed all of our favorite dichos (sayings) and picked our favorites
- Began creating designs around the individual saying
- Created screens to screen print our designs
- Printed our designs onto t-shirts and put them up on our site
Sounds easy but in reality the design process takes quite a bit of time and there are a ton of revisions along the way. The end result however is worth all of the hard work that we put in.
