Looking for a DIY project to spruce up your home or garden? Well let me share with you how we made our DIY Planters out of mortar. My kids and I made these to give as gift this past holiday but these are great to make any time of year.
To make these you will need a few materials
- mortar mix (can be found at home depot)
- plastic or foam cups in two sizes
- plastic straws
- container to mix mortar
- spoon (something to stir)
- sand paper
- acrylic paints
- small plants to put inside
- potting soil
Begin by mixing your mortar mix. This step can me a little messy so you can lay down some newspaper or soemthing to cover your work area. Follow the instruction on your bag of mortar and stir until you get the mix to a peanut butter consistency. Kinda like this
Step 2: This part is a little harder to explain in words but here goes. We made a hole on the bottom of the larger and smaller cup. We put the straw through the first cup and then added the mortar mix. When the cup was about 3/4 full we put the straw through the bottom of the second smaller cup and pushed it down into the mix. Careful not to let the mix spill out to much out of the cup.
Step 3: After you have your mortar in your molds just the way you like, it’s time to set them out to dry. Follow the instructions on your bag or mortar but most will need to dry for 24 hours. While they dry you can gather your materials for the next step DECORATION! They should come out something like this
After your planter are dry you can sand the edges and then you are ready to paint them and decorate them as you like. We used a few coats of acrylic paint and painters tape to create patterns. After your paint your pots and they dry add the soil and plants. The are endless!
There you have it! That’s how we made are our mortar planters and we are pretty happy with them. If you make some planters share your pictures with us. We would love to see what you come up with.
